About Hanover Chapel, Brighton
Hanover Chapel, Brighton is a former Congregational place of worship in Brighton, East Sussex. Its site is beside Church Street and North Road. The church is recognised as a Grade II listed building, reflecting its architectural and historical significance.
The chapel dates from 1825 and was erected on land provided for the Reverend James Edwards, a Presbyterian minister serving locally. Edwards later moved to Bognor Regis, where he established another chapel bearing the same name. Both were called Hanover Chapel in acknowledgement of the House of Hanover, which was Britain’s reigning royal dynasty at the time. The Brighton building therefore has its origins in the town’s early nineteenth-century Nonconformist history.
