About French Protestant Church, Brighton
The French Protestant Church, Brighton stands in Queensbury Mews, near the seafront and the Metropole Hotel in Brighton, East Sussex. Once a centre for Francophone Protestant worship, it closed after its final service in July 2008. The property was adapted as a residence in 2009 and 2010, with substantial elements of both the interior and exterior preserved.
Brighton’s French-speaking congregation was formally constituted in 1858 and gathered at several domestic, ecclesiastical and civic venues before securing its own premises. Completed in 1887 and dedicated in February 1888, the church was designed by W. G. Gibbins in a Gothic manner. Its red brick walls support a slate roof, while a copper-capped spire crowns the square turret. Distinctive features include lancet glazing on the west elevation, a pointed entrance and a four-lobed circular window to the south. Objects marking Queen Victoria’s 1887 jubilee were sealed within a capsule beneath the main foundation stone.
