About Church of St Michael
The Church of St Michael serves as Garton’s Church of England parish church in East Garton, East Riding of Yorkshire. Although the present building developed over several centuries, its origins are medieval, and an earlier place of worship at Garton appears in the Domesday Book. It has held Grade I listed status since 1966.
The north wall dates from the 1100s, while the west tower was added early in the following century and the chancel later in that century. A southern aisle and chapel followed during the 1300s, with the porch added in the 1400s. Built mainly from cobbles with cut-stone detailing, the church has a brick porch and a two-stage tower without buttresses. Restorations took place after disrepair was noted in 1578, again in the late 1600s, and throughout the building in 1887 under Smith & Brodrick. Interior features include a late medieval screen and an eight-sided font from the mid-1200s.
