About Church of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Helena
The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Helena is a ruined former Anglican parish church at Nunkeeling, near Bewholme in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Closed since 1928, it is protected as a Grade II listed building, and its surviving fabric was stabilised in 1987.
Founded in 1152 in connection with Nunkeeling Priory, the church initially comprised a nave and chancel. A northern aisle was introduced during the 13th century, then removed following the suppression of the monasteries. The increasingly dilapidated building was reconstructed with reused masonry in 1810. Now roofless, it has brick walls clad in stone and cobbles, with a nave of two bays and a one-bay chancel. Architectural details include a rounded western doorway, pointed nave openings with modest keystones, and three graduated lancet windows at the east end. Its bell, Norman font and memorials were transferred to churches in Bewholme, Hull and Hornsea.
