About Church of Saint Bartholomew
The Church of Saint Bartholomew is the Church of England parish church serving Aldbrough in Yorkshire’s East Riding. It remains a place of parish worship and has held Grade II* listed status since 1966, recognising its considerable historic and architectural importance.
Parts of the nave date from the 11th century, including several surviving windows. The chancel and nave aisles followed during the 12th century, while the western tower was added early in the 13th. Constructed from courses of cobbles beneath slate roofing, the church also includes a clerestory, south porch and northern chapel. Much of the nave was reconstructed in 1870–71, and Temple Moore restored the tower in 1908. Inside is an 11th-century sundial commemorating Ulf and Gunware, alongside a possible medieval carving of a Roman soldier, John de Mulsa’s 1377 chest tomb, a late 14th-century female effigy and a 15th-century font supported by an eight-sided pillar.
