Tranent Parish Church is an active Church of Scotland parish church in Tranent, East Lothian, about ten miles south-east of Edinburgh. It stands off Church Street in the older northern part of the town, above a ravine with views towards the Firth of Forth. The Presbyterian church is protected as a Category B listed building.
A church at Tranent is documented from 1145, when it was founded by Thor, an archdeacon and the son of a local landowner. It later belonged to the canons of Holyrood Abbey. The medieval building suffered severe damage during attacks by the Earl of Hertford’s forces in 1544 and 1547, before becoming Protestant during the Scottish Reformation. After centuries of repair and alteration, a replacement designed by John Simpson was commissioned in 1799 and opened the following year. This is the building that survives today. It underwent extensive interior renewal and refurbishment in 1954, costing more than £10,000. The kirkyard includes historic memorials and a lectern-style doocot dated 1587.
