About St Mary's Collegiate Church
St Mary’s Collegiate Church stands in an open churchyard outside the centre of Haddington, East Lothian. It remains an active Church of Scotland parish church and is protected as a Category A listed building. At approximately 63 metres from east to west, it is Scotland’s longest church.
Construction began around 1380, with later alterations and rebuilding continuing across several centuries. The cruciform building follows an Early Gothic design, with an aisled nave and choir, transepts and a square central tower. After damage in the 16th century, the nave and tower were restored for congregational worship, while a major programme of work in the 1970s renewed the whole building. Notable features include elaborate vaulting, carved stonework, Maitland and Seton family memorials, and stained glass by Edward Burne-Jones. A pipe organ was installed in 1990, followed in 1999 by eight bells originally cast in 1911.
