About St Martin's Kirk
St Martin’s Kirk is a roofless medieval church in Nungate, Haddington, East Lothian. Now a scheduled monument, it is a rare surviving example of a Scottish parish church dating from the 1100s. The site entered state care in 1911 and received scheduled protection in 1921.
Founded during the 12th century, the church began as a chapel linked to St Mary’s nunnery in Haddington. It remained in use for Protestant worship following the Reformation, but later deteriorated and was abandoned. The rectangular building once comprised a nave and chancel, although only the nave remains. Its walls are formed from uneven courses of red sandstone, finished with dressed stone details. Alterations in the 13th century introduced vaulting and six buttresses. Surviving features include a pointed stone vault at the western end, a rounded chancel arch, narrow round-topped windows, entrances in both side walls and traces of a piscina beside the arch.
