New Laigh Kirk stands on John Dickie Street in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. It belongs to the Church of Scotland and is protected as a Category A listed building. The church also contains a replica of the Homeless Jesus sculpture.
This is the third church to occupy the site. Its origins are traditionally associated with St Marnock, while the oldest surviving structure is the tower base, which dates from 1410. A replacement church opened in 1750 but became overcrowded and was considered unsafe. On 18 October 1801, falling plaster prompted panic during a crowded service. A stampede killed 29 people, with another person dying later. The building was swiftly demolished, and the present, roomier church was completed in 1802. The burial ground also received the remains of John Ross and John Sheilds, two men executed in Edinburgh.
