About Loudoun Kirk

Loudoun Kirk is a disused Category B listed church in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, about a mile west of Loudoun Castle. Formerly the parish church, it was replaced in that role by the church at Newmilns after 1600. The building and kirkyard continued to host occasional services and burials. A local charity has cared for the site since 1994.

The church was traditionally dated to 1451, although later research into medieval records has suggested an origin in 1198. Its income supported Kilwinning Abbey, whose monks were required to provide a curate for local worshippers. The building suffered severe damage during feuding between the Campbells and Kennedys in 1527–28 and was rebuilt soon afterwards. The Third Marquess of Bute funded repairs in 1898. Its vault and graveyard contain burials associated with the Campbell family, poet Janet Little and Lady Flora Hastings.
