About St Saviour's Church

St Saviour’s Church belongs to the Church of England and serves the parish of Iford in Bournmouth, Dorset. It continues to have a community role, with regular gatherings for different age groups, including children, young people and older residents. Its seasonal programme includes Christingle services and a Halloween Light Party.

Built in response to substantial local population growth during the 1930s, the church was planned by local architect Frederic W. Lawrence. Its design draws on Romanesque forms, using variegated brickwork outside, plaster finishes within, and roofing formed from tile and asphalt. The foundation stone dates from August 1935, and Cyril Garbett, then Bishop of Winchester, dedicated the completed building on 22 September 1936. Its spaces include the main worship area, flanking aisles, sanctuary, Lady chapel, organ room and vestries. A two-level hall, completed beside it in 1994, received a Civic Trust award. A contemporary glazed link joined the hall and church in 2012.
