About Parish Church of St Mary, Uffculme

The Parish Church of St Mary, Uffculme is the principal Church of England parish church serving Uffculme in Devon. Combining medieval fabric with Victorian work, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

A church was recorded here in 1136, while its possible origins may extend to the Saxon period and links with Glastonbury Abbey. The surviving structure developed through gradual Gothic rebuilding from the early 1300s, followed by further work in the next century. Rubble limestone walls and slate roofs form much of the exterior. John Hayward added a second south aisle in 1846–47 and reconstructed the tower and spire in 1849, incorporating some earlier masonry. The 120-foot broach spire is an uncommon Devon feature. Inside, the historic rood screen is considered both Devon’s earliest and its greatest in length, while other details include medieval glass, a pulpit made in 1715 and an organ relocated to the north aisle in 1981.
