About St Michael's Chapel, Chapel Hill
St Michael’s Chapel stands at the top of Chapel Hill in Torquay, Devon. This compact medieval building has no aisles and is now protected as a scheduled monument. Its elevated position on a rocky outcrop, remote from settlement during the Middle Ages, may indicate that it had a particular religious significance.
Probably built during the 13th or 14th century, the chapel preserves substantial medieval material. Local grey limestone rubble forms the walls, with red sandstone used around the openings and at the corners, beneath a stone-slate roof. An arched southern entrance, now secured by an iron grille, has traces of a former stone porch. Inside are surviving areas of early plaster and a recess that may once have served as a piscina. Several windows light the interior, including a larger eastern opening. The floor is exposed natural rock, worn near the doorway after long use. A connection with nearby Torre Abbey has been suggested, although evidence supports this only after the medieval period.
