About St Peter's Church, Tiverton

St Peter’s Church, Tiverton serves as an active Anglican parish church in Tiverton, Devon. Its Grade I designation, awarded in 1952, places it among England’s buildings of greatest historic and architectural interest.

Christian worship on the site can be traced to 1073, while the present structure largely belongs to the fifteenth century and is dated to about 1450. G. A. Boyce directed restoration work from 1825 until 1829, and Edward Ashworth, an Exeter architect, oversaw another programme between 1853 and 1856. Organ music is documented there from 1524. Christian Smith made the existing instrument in 1696, with later alterations involving Andrews and Shirland, John Snetzler, Henry Willis and Noel Mander. The church also hosted what is considered the earliest rendition of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, played by Samuel Reay for the marriage of Dorothy Carew to Tom Daniel on 2 June 1847.
