About Parish church of St Giles, St Giles in the Wood

The Parish Church of St Giles serves St Giles in the Wood in Devon as a Church of England place of worship. Dedicated to St Giles the Hermit, it remains in use for parish worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Founded in 1309, the church originated as a chapel for residents for whom travelling to Great Torrington was inconvenient. It was wholly reconstructed in the Perpendicular Gothic style during the 16th century. A further rebuilding in 1862–63, designed by John Hayward and financed by local landowner Mark Rolle, preserved the exterior walls, western tower and several Rolle family memorials. The tower houses six bells, while Rolle provided a pulpit made from marble and alabaster. An organ chamber and vestry followed in 1879. Since 1967, part of the southern aisle has formed the Mary Withecombe Chapel, used by smaller gatherings.
