About St Boniface Church
St Boniface Church is a Church of England place of worship in St Budeaux, Plymouth, Devon. Its present building remains in active use and combines worship space with a church hall.
The first church was designed by London architect William Douglas Caröe and constructed from 1911 to 1913 in response to local population growth. Financial constraints meant that part of the nave and the planned western tower were omitted. Plymouth practice Evans & Sloggett designed a concrete addition, completed in 1965, though the tower was again excluded. Rising maintenance and repair costs later led to the building’s replacement and demolition in 2003. Stained glass created around 1965 by Dom Charles Norris was preserved for the new church. A teak cross in the grounds, fashioned from timber taken from a ship, was given by the Royal Navy in 1965.
