About Plymouth Cathedral

Plymouth Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Plymouth, Devon, dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Boniface. It serves as the cathedral of the Bishop of Plymouth and the principal church of a diocese encompassing Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. The Grade II listed building also hosts a yearly Mass in July for Royal Navy personnel based at HMNB Devonport.

The Diocese of Plymouth was established in 1850, with the earlier Saint Mary’s Church initially serving as its temporary cathedral. Bishop William Vaughan acquired a new site in 1856, and construction began that June. Designed by Joseph and Charles Hansom and built by workers from Stonehouse, the cathedral opened for worship on the Feast of the Annunciation in March 1858. Vaughan formally consecrated it in September 1880.
