About St Peter's and St Paul's Church, Holsworthy
St Peter's and St Paul's Church, Holsworthy is the active Church of England parish church serving Holsworthy in Devon. It is recognised as a Grade II* listed building and remains the town’s principal Anglican place of worship.
The present building originated in the mid-thirteenth century and follows the Early English style. It replaced a probable Norman oratory erected around 1130, fragments of which survive within the south porch. The three-stage western tower was added during the fifteenth century and rises to almost 86 feet, containing eight bells and a carillon. Extensive work between 1881 and 1883 included reconstructing the chancel, nave, southern aisle and porch, while adding a northern aisle, vestry and organ chamber. Local stone forms the walls, with Hatherleigh stone used for architectural details. Interior features include nineteenth-century stained glass, medieval octagonal piers, a carved oak pulpit from 1910 and an oak reredos dating from about 1926.
