About St Pancras Church, Exeter
St Pancras Church, Exeter is a small Church of England church set within the Guildhall Shopping Centre in central Exeter. It is thought to stand on the city’s earliest place of Christian worship and is generally accessible on weekdays. The church has been protected at Grade II* since 1953, reflecting its importance as a compact medieval town church with many historic features preserved.
Its dedication may point to Anglo-Saxon beginnings, although the earliest known written mention is from 1191 and much of the present structure was built during the 13th century. John Loughborough Pearson later restored the chancel arch after an earlier replacement had altered it. The 11th-century font predates most of the fabric, while a Jacobean pulpit and medieval memorial tablets arrived from All Hallows Church in 1906. Stained glass installed in the east window in 1895 shows Saint Pancras, the Crucifixion and Saint Boniface.
