About Wolford Chapel

Wolford Chapel is situated in Dunkeswell, Devon, close to Honiton. Now held by the Ontario Heritage Trust, it is also protected in England at Grade II. Ontario owns both the chapel and its grounds, and the Canadian flag is displayed there. John Graves Simcoe, the inaugural lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, is buried within, as are his wife Elizabeth and six of their children.

Simcoe ordered the chapel’s construction in 1802 on his Wolford estate, perhaps where an older church once stood. Modest in scale, it has a rectangular layout, walls of Devon rubble stone, worked limestone detailing and roofing of slate. After the property left Simcoe family ownership, publisher Sir Geoffrey Harmsworth became its owner. He oversaw repairs in 1966 and then transferred the chapel for the benefit of Ontario. The Ontario Heritage Trust took legal ownership in 1982, later undertaking further conservation in partnership with the memorial foundation.
