About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is an active Church of England parish church in Berry Pomeroy, Devon. Dating from about 1250, it has Grade I protection. Visiting clergy conduct services, while the Friends of Berry Pomeroy Church oversee its upkeep. Its condition is considered poor, and it is recorded nationally as heritage at risk.
Richard de Pomeroy commissioned an extensive reconstruction in the later fifteenth century, using the Perpendicular architectural style. The layout joins the nave and chancel, with an aisle on either side and a porch featuring a ribbed stone vault with decorated bosses. Further restoration occurred near the end of the seventeenth century and again in 1878–79. A richly decorated screen spans the interior and preserves painted figures and much original woodwork. Other features include eight bells, glass designed by Christopher Whall and Veronica Whall, and memorials to the Pomeroy and Seymour families.
