About Umberleigh Chapel
Umberleigh Chapel is a ruined medieval place of worship at Atherington in north Devon, beside Umberleigh House, a surviving Georgian farmhouse. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the chapel and neighbouring house have been protected at Grade I since 1965. Only part of the structure remains, and it is no longer an active church.
Lady Joan Willington, born into the Champernowne family, founded the chapel around the early 14th century and endowed it with land to support a chaplain. Much of the building was taken down around 1800. Its surviving south wall now serves as the rear wall of a storage outbuilding. Several medieval monuments were transferred to the church at Atherington around 1820, including paired armoured effigies associated with the Willington family and a damaged 13th-century figure possibly depicting Sir William de Champernowne.
