About St Mary's Church, Tissington
St Mary’s Church, Tissington is an active Church of England parish church in Tissington, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. The Grade II* listed building belongs to the Peak Seven group, which brings together seven local churches.
The church has origins in the 12th century, with both the chancel and southern porch surviving from that period. Its Norman doorway includes a tympanum carved with a pair of upright figures. Restoration work took place in 1854, when an additional aisle was built on the northern side. Memorials commemorate members of the FitzHerbert family, including Francis FitzHerbert, who died in 1619, and Sir John FitzHerbert, who died in 1643. Another remembers Frank Richard Allsop, who died aboard the Titanic in 1912. The pipe organ was made by Sheffield organ builder Albert Keates.
