About St Peter's Church, Stonebroom
St Peter’s Church, Stonebroom is an Anglican place of worship serving Stonebroom, near Alfreton in Derbyshire. The church remains part of a shared parish alongside Holy Cross at Morton and St Leonard’s at Shirland. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through Grade II protection.
Villagers formerly made the roughly one-mile journey to Shirland for services. A local mission was later established in a room formed from several cottages, before an iron church was provided around 1880. The current building, designed by Derby architect Percy H. Currey, was constructed during 1900 and 1901 to commemorate John Jackson of Stubben Edge, Ashover. Its plot was donated by the Clay Cross Company, and railway enlargement work in the Erewash Valley supplied rubble stone for the structure. Mrs John Jackson set the foundation stone in place on 7 July 1900. Services began there in July 1901, with consecration taking place six years later. Nottingham firm Musson and Compton added the organ in 1904, at a cost of almost £200.
