St Asaph Cathedral stands in St Asaph, Denbighshire, and serves as the bishop’s seat. This Grade I listed place of worship belongs to the Church of England tradition. It remains active, and the cathedral choir contributes to three weekly services.
The site’s Christian origins reach back to the sixth century, when a church was established there or nearby, traditionally by Saint Kentigern. Saint Asaph later succeeded him. The surviving structure began to take shape during the 1200s after Edward I’s forces destroyed an earlier stone cathedral in 1282. Further devastation during Owain Glyndŵr’s uprising left part of it derelict for roughly seven decades. Extensive reconstruction took place under Henry VII, followed by substantial Victorian restoration. In 1930, serious subsidence affected the tower, possibly because of a stream beneath the ground, prompting repairs that neared completion in 1935. A Welsh Bible translated in full by former bishop William Morgan is displayed inside.
