About Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Rhyl
Our Lady of the Assumption Church serves the Roman Catholic community of Rhyl in Denbighshire. Sometimes called St Mary’s, it is an active parish within the Diocese of Wrexham. Its regular services include Sunday Mass at 10.00am, with further celebrations at 9.30am between Tuesday and Friday.
Jesuits based at St Beuno’s College established the Rhyl mission in 1851. Worship first took place in a public house before rented Assembly Rooms provided space for both a chapel and school. A purpose-built chapel followed on Ffynnongroew Road in 1854, but growing attendance soon required larger premises. Bishop James Brown laid the cornerstone of a new building in March 1863, and it welcomed worshippers that December. Its features included glass designed by John Hungerford Pollen. Structural concerns led to its replacement in 1973, when the present building was erected where the former parish hall had stood. Construction cost £230,000 and finished on 21 December.
