About Marble Church, Bodelwyddan
Marble Church, Bodelwyddan serves as a parish church in Groesffordd Marli, Denbighshire, close to the A55. Its 202-foot spire can be seen from a considerable distance. The building has held Grade II* listed status since November 1962.
Lady Margaret Willoughby de Broke founded the church to commemorate her late husband, Henry Peyto-Verney, the 16th Baron Willoughby de Broke. Work began with the laying of its foundation stone in July 1856, and the Bishop of St Asaph consecrated it in August 1860. John Gibson designed the £60,000 building in the Decorated Gothic tradition. Its interior incorporates fourteen kinds of marble, among them Belgian Red for the columns, Anglesey stone at the nave doorway, and Languedoc shafts set upon Purbeck bases. Ornate timber work is another notable element. Stained glass in the tower portrays Saint Margaret and Saint Kentigern.
