About All Saints' Church, Llangar
All Saints’ Church, Llangar stands near Cynwyd in the Dee Valley, Denbighshire. Once the parish church for Llangar and Cynwyd, it is now preserved by Cadw and welcomes visitors. It is protected as a scheduled monument and also holds Grade I listed status.
Written evidence records a church on the site in 1291, while excavations suggest that the existing building originated during the 15th century. The nave and chancel occupy one uninterrupted space, with stone paving and a timber roof supported by curved braces. Surviving murals represent several periods of decoration, including medieval imagery and a later depiction of Death as a skeleton. Much of the woodwork dates from the early 1700s, including enclosed pews, seating, a western gallery and a pulpit incorporating desks for reading and the parish clerk. The building was left unused after a replacement church opened in Cynwyd during the 19th century, and a substantial programme of preservation started in 1974.
