About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church stands in Betws Gwerfil Goch, Denbighshire, and remains an active Church of England parish church. It belongs to the Diocese of St Asaph and is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.
The church probably originated in the 12th century, although an older place of worship dedicated to Saint Elain may once have occupied the site. Built of shale, it has slate roofing with stone tiles along the ridges. The layout comprises a nave, chancel, south porch and a vestry beside the chancel. John Douglas undertook a substantial restoration in 1881–82, removing the north doorway and box pews, renewing the windows, adding the vestry and a southern buttress, and installing a new screen. His work also included the three-light east window, a lychgate and a spired bellcote, though the bellcote was removed in 1985. A stone cross crowns the eastern end.
