About St Peter's Church, Kirkbampton
St Peter’s Church, Kirkbampton, serves as a Church of England parish church in the Cumbrian village of Kirkbampton. It remains in use and forms part of a joint benefice alongside parishes at Aikton, Kirkandrews-on-Eden with Beaumont, and Burgh by Sands. The building is designated Grade I for its outstanding historic and architectural importance.
The church originated in the twelfth century and was built around 1150. Its fabric uses red sandstone together with calciferous sandstone, with slate coverings of both green and sandstone varieties. Surviving Norman work includes carved doorways, early narrow windows and a chancel arch ornamented with chevrons and scallop designs. Restoration campaigns followed in 1870–71 and 1882; ancient Roman masonry from Hadrian’s Wall was later set into the southern wall. The east window contains work designed by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, while other glass is attributed to William Wailes. Albert E. Pease built the two-manual organ around 1900.
