About Ireby Old Church
Ireby Old Church stands in a secluded setting about a mile west of Ireby in Cumbria. This former Anglican church is now redundant, with only its chancel surviving, and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is both a scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building.
Dating from the early 12th century, the church is built of sandstone and limestone blocks beneath a green slate roof. Its nave, northern aisle and porch were demolished during alterations in 1845–46, when several fittings and carvings were transferred to a new village church. Ewan Christian restored the remaining two-bay chancel in 1880. Features include an open bellcote, a reused Norman tympanum, medieval grave slabs and small round-headed east windows. Inside are a restored three-arched arcade, a stone altar shelf, a carved medieval cross and memorials dated 1626 and 1769.
