About St Kentigern's Church, Caldbeck
St Kentigern’s Church, Caldbeck, is a Church of England place of worship near Hesket Newmarket in Cumbria. Dedicated to the saint also called Mungo, it continues to serve as a parish church in the Carlisle diocese. Its historic importance is recognised through listing at Grade I.
Surviving medieval fabric originated during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, on ground previously occupied by a sixth-century church. The main structure uses sandstone, while limestone forms the tower, and green slate covers the roof. Its layout includes a nave of six bays, two aisles, a clerestory, chancel, porch and western tower. John Whelpdale oversaw changes in 1512, rebuilding the chancel and creating a chapel that later became the vestry. Another level was placed on the tower in 1727, followed by restoration campaigns in 1880 and 1932. Interior features include a hexagonal font from the fourteenth century and William Wailes glass installed in the eastern window in 1867.
