About Our Lady and St Joseph's Church
Our Lady and St Joseph's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Carlisle, Cumbria. Standing where Warwick Square meets Warwick Road, it remains in use and is served by clergy of the Lancaster Diocese. It belongs to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a parish covering Carlisle and the surrounding district, and is protected with Grade II status.
Catholic worship in Carlisle dates to a West Walls chapel founded by the Fairburn family in 1798, followed two years later by a mission led by Joseph Marshall. A Chapel Street church was completed in 1825, but the congregation later outgrew it. Work on the present building began with the laying of its first stone on 18 May 1891, and it opened in 1893. Archibald Matthias Dunn was among the architects of the Dunn, Hansom and Dunn design. The project occupied Warwick Square land belonging to the Duke of Devonshire and cost £12,000.
