About St. Macartan's Cathedral
St. Macartan’s Cathedral is a Church of England church in Fivemiletown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Dating from 1744, it is protected as a Grade A listed building. The cathedral belongs to the Diocese of Clogher, which has a second cathedral at Enniskillen.
Tradition traces its origins to about 490, when St Macartan established a monastery and episcopal seat at the direction of his friend St Patrick. An earlier church was reconstructed in 1041 and dedicated to St Macartan, then rebuilt again in 1295 under Matthew M’Catasaid, Bishop of Clogher. A major fire in 1396 destroyed that building, two chapels and several neighbouring structures. James Martin designed the current cathedral in the neo-classical style in 1744. Notable features include stained glass, while nearby remains include two high crosses and a sundial approximately five feet tall.
