About Maghera Old Church
Maghera Old Church is a ruined place of worship in Maghera, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Also called Old St Lurach’s Church, it is protected as a scheduled monument and maintained by the state. It ceased serving as the parish church in 1819, when a replacement church opened on the opposite side of the road.
St Lurach established a religious community here during the sixth century, probably as a monastery. Viking raiders attacked it in 832, and fire caused serious damage in 1135. The surviving nave dates from the tenth century, while the Romanesque western entrance was probably added during the twelfth century. Above it is a weathered carving of the Crucifixion, one of only three surviving Irish examples from that period. The site served as a bishop’s seat from the mid-twelfth century to 1245 before becoming a parish church. Following wartime damage in 1688, it was rebuilt, and its tower may have been adapted as a belfry. Major conservation work concluded in 1984.
