About St Columba's Church
St Columba’s Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in central Londonderry, County Londonderry, within the Diocese of Derry. Also known as Long Tower, it remains a parish-focused place of worship and is protected as a Grade A listed building.
Catholic worship on the site can be traced to the 12th century. The present church developed from a smaller building begun in 1783 and opened in 1788, funded through contributions from both Catholic and Protestant residents. An extension and refurbishment in 1810 added the nave and gallery seating, while the altar was moved to the north side. Its heavy marble high altar rests on four marble columns, which replaced inadequate wooden supports. Further work completed in 1909 introduced stained glass, statues, shrines, a font and a new sacristy. Later liturgical alterations were deliberately limited, helping to preserve much of the historic interior.
