About First Presbyterian Church
First Presbyterian Church stands on Church Street in Kilrea, County Londonderry. It is a Presbyterian place of worship within the Coleraine and Limavady Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and the building is protected at Grade B2. In January 2026, the First Kilrea congregation joined Boveedy and Second Kilrea to create the united Kilrea Presbyterian Church.
Presbyterian worship in the district began at Moyknock, where an early meeting house was destroyed by fire in 1642. A replacement at Boveedy served several surrounding parishes. Kilrea’s first meeting house followed in 1770, standing near the site of the current church. The Mercers’ Company funded the present building, designed by London architect William Barnes. Its foundation stone was set in 1837, and it opened two years later, in 1839. It was formerly known locally as the Scots Kirk.
