About Saint Columb's Cathedral

Saint Columb's Cathedral is a Church of England place of worship on London Street in the walled city of Derry/Londonderry, County Londonderry. Dedicated to Saint Columba, it remains an active parish church and holds Grade A listed status. The cathedral serves the historic parish of Templemore.

Consecrated in 1633, the church was built by London craftsman William Parratt in a seventeenth-century continuation of English Gothic design. A stone tablet from the earlier Templemore church is preserved in the porch. The tower was heightened in 1776, although its new spire was soon removed because it had become unsafe; the tower was completed in 1802 and another spire followed about twenty years later. Oak fittings were installed during extensive interior work in 1861–62, when the aisle galleries were also taken out. A new chancel was completed in 1887 upon the foundations laid in 1633, and the chapter house dates from 1910. The cathedral also keeps historic documents and the original city keys associated with the Siege of Derry.
