It remains notable not only as a place of worship but also for its association with several prominent people who were laid to rest there.
Among those buried at the church is Seamus Heaney, the poet who received the Nobel Prize for Literature. His grave gives the site a particular literary significance. Francis Hughes and Thomas McElwee are also buried there. Both men were members of the IRA who died while taking part in hunger strikes. These burials form the principal recorded historical associations of the church.
