About St Peter's Church, Stockton-on-Tees

St Peter’s Church, Stockton-on-Tees is an active Anglican parish church in County Durham, protected at Grade II*. Its worship reflects the liberal Catholic strand of Anglican practice. Together with All Saints in Hartburn, it belongs to the Stockton St Peter benefice under the Diocese of Durham.

The parish originated in 1875 when territory formerly overseen by Holy Trinity in Stockton was assigned to the new parish. Its first place of worship combined timber with masonry. A permanent replacement followed in 1880–81, using red brick complemented by stone detailing. The completed building was dedicated for worship on 13 October 1881. Formal recognition of its special architectural and historical importance came on 19 January 1951, when it received its present heritage classification.
