About Church of St Oswald
The Church of St Oswald serves as an active Anglican parish church in Durham, County Durham. It belongs to the Three Saints benefice in Durham Diocese, alongside the parish churches at Shincliffe, Coxhoe and Kelloe. Its architectural and historic significance is recognised through its Grade II* status, granted in May 1952.
Most of the current structure is from the closing decades of the twelfth century, although an older place of worship may previously have occupied the site. Ignatius Bonomi undertook extensive reconstruction in 1834. Further work followed under Hodgson Fowler in 1864, including renewal of the chancel and tower and construction of space for an organ. Victorian stained glass includes the western window by Morris & Co, produced in 1864–66 with contributions from Ford Madox Brown, as well as designs from Kempe & Co and Clayton and Bell. Fire damaged the chancel and ruined the organ in 1984. Peter Collins made its replacement, which stands in a western gallery and underwent restoration in 2019.
