About Church of St Aiden
The Church of St Aiden is in Blackhill, Consett, County Durham. Now a former place of worship, it ceased operating on 31 December 1995. The building received Grade II protection in January 1987. After years of deterioration, its owner was fined £10,000 in December 2024 for not completing necessary repairs, followed by a further £124,800 penalty in July 2025 when no additional work had begun.
Dating from 1885, the church was constructed in sandstone beneath a slate-covered roof. The Consett Iron Company provided the site on which it was erected. Its tower was completed in 1903. Eight bells, produced by the Mears & Stainbank foundry in 1922, were later hung there. Following the closure, they were taken from the building and moved to South Shields.
