About Saint Patrick's Church
Saint Patrick's Church is a Church of England place of worship on Church Street in Newry, County Down. Set above the eastern part of the city, it looks towards Newry’s centre from its elevated position. The church is recognised for its architectural and historic interest as a Grade B+ listed building, a designation awarded in 1976.
The earliest church on the site is thought to date from 1578, when Nicholas Bagenal directed its construction after receiving former monastic property from Edward VI. It has been described as Ireland’s earliest Protestant church, although the present structure largely results from a rebuilding completed in 1866. Built of granite, its most distinctive feature is the clock tower, which has a small steeple at each of its four corners.
