About Loughinisland Churches
Loughinisland Churches comprise three ecclesiastical ruins at Tievenadarragh, near Loughinisland in County Down, Northern Ireland. They stand within an extensive burial ground on an island in Loughinisland Lake, which can now be approached along a causeway. The remains are protected historic monuments in state care.
The group spans the thirteenth to seventeenth centuries, with 1599 recorded as its building date. Medieval records refer to the island and its churches as Lerkes or Lyrge. The North Church measures approximately 66.5 feet long and 30 feet wide. Its two gable walls remain upright, together with much of each side wall. At the western end, the entrance survives with a slender window positioned directly above it.
