About Kilwarlin Moravian Church

Kilwarlin Moravian Church stands in the small village of Kilwarlin, close to Hillsborough in County Down. It is a Grade B1 listed building and serves a congregation whose origins reach back to the eighteenth century.

John Cennick established the congregation in 1755 during the early Moravian movement in Ireland. Its first church, burial ground and minister’s house later deteriorated, and membership had fallen to six by 1834. Renewal followed the arrival of the Revd Basil Patras Zula and his wife Ann. A replacement church welcomed worshippers in March 1835, when 26 people also became members. Zula rebuilt the manse with duplicate doors and stairways, together with a concealed refuge beneath a small raised room. He also funded landscaping inspired by the battlefield at Thermopylae, much of which survives.
