About St. Elizabeth's, Dundonald
St. Elizabeth’s, Dundonald is an active Church of Ireland parish church in Dundonald, County Down. It stands on Church Green in the Church Quarter townland, close to Moat Park. The site includes the present church, an older church building, parish halls and a historic burial ground.
The parish traces its history to the fourteenth century. Its earlier building remains beside the medieval graveyard, while the present church was rebuilt on an adjoining site in 1966. Formerly called Dundonald Parish Church, it received its current dedication in 1892 to commemorate Eliza Cleland. The churchyard contains the 1842 mausoleum of Samuel Cleland, an imposing blue-granite memorial with pillars and a canopy. Built at his wife’s request, it was designed to be visible from the family residence at Stormont Castle. Work undertaken in 2014 included changes to the front of the modern church and provision of a new car park.
