About St Marks Church
St Marks Church is a Church of Ireland parish church in the Sydenham area of Belfast, County Down. It serves the parish of Dundela and is protected as a Grade A listed building. The parish was formerly part of neighbouring Holywood, becoming independent after the church was consecrated in 1878.
Designed by William Butterfield, the church was begun in 1876 as Belfast and the surrounding district expanded. Although opened for worship in 1878, the building was finished in 1891 when its chancel and two transepts were added, creating a cross-shaped plan. Stephen Dykes Bower directed a substantial restoration in 1976. Ten bells, cast by John Taylor & Co, were installed low in the tower in 1955 to limit structural movement. C. S. Lewis was baptised here in 1899 by his grandfather, the first rector, and he and his brother Warren later gave a Michael Healy window commemorating their parents.
