About St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh
St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh is the Roman Catholic mother church of the Archdiocese of Armagh. Situated on Sandy Hill in Armagh, County Armagh, it remains the official see of the Catholic Archbishop of Armagh, who holds the title Primate of All Ireland. The cathedral shares the city’s elevated landscape with the Anglican cathedral.
Construction began after Archbishop William Crolly returned the Catholic primatial see to Armagh. A foundation ceremony took place on 17 March 1838, and the work continued intermittently from 1840 to 1904. Thomas Duff conceived a cross-shaped Gothic building incorporating a central tower, twin western towers, transepts, choir, nave and side aisles. Building ceased during the Great Famine, leaving only lower sections completed, before restarting in 1854. James Joseph McCarthy then reshaped Duff’s Perpendicular Gothic design with fourteenth-century Decorated Gothic elements, including altered tracery, an apostle arcade at the west front and a roof raised by about six metres.
