About St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh
St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh is a Church of Ireland place of worship in Armagh, County Armagh. It serves as the diocesan cathedral and houses the ministry of Armagh’s Anglican archbishop. The church remains in religious use and is protected as a Grade A listed building.
Tradition records that Saint Patrick established a church here in 445, on a hill thought to have earlier religious associations. By the seventh century, the community had developed into northern Ireland’s foremost monastic and teaching establishment. The cathedral suffered damage and rebuilding on numerous occasions, including a major blaze in 1511 and destruction connected with the conflict ending in 1603. Between 1834 and 1840, Archbishop John George Beresford commissioned architect Lewis Nockalls Cottingham to undertake extensive reconstruction. Much of the mediaeval fabric survives in restored form, with historic features including nave pillar carvings, exterior gargoyles, Celtic stonework and sculpture dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
