About St Patrick's Church, Belfast
St Patrick’s Church is a Catholic parish church in the Donegall Street district of Belfast, County Antrim. Still serving its parish, it was cared for by a single priest in 2024, the first such arrangement for more than two centuries. The church is protected as a Grade B+ listed building.
A church dedicated to St Patrick first opened here in 1815, following construction begun four years earlier as Belfast’s Catholic population increased. The present, larger building was designed by Timothy Hevey and completed in 1877, replacing the original church on the same site. Its Romanesque Revival design includes a four-stage tower and a 55-metre spire containing a two-ton bell cast by Dublin maker Thomas Sheridan. Above the entrance stands a 2.1-metre statue of St Patrick carved by James Pearse. Inside is Sir John Lavery’s triptych showing Our Lady with St Brigid and St Patrick, unveiled in 1919.
